Hello, and welcome to the Les Paul Learning Club!

Les Paul is a colossal figure in the world of music and of guitar.

He was a man of many extraordinary talents. He invented, and held patents for, numerous technologies that were ‘firsts’ in music production and engineering, in addition to creating the first solid-body electric guitar that bears his name.

Above all though, Les was also a guitar visionary who had unique conception on the instrument that inspired countless guitarists across genres. He was a bona-fide guitar “hero” to legions of players.

Les’ groundbreaking guitar performances of his tight arrangements garnered record sales in the millions and earned him Grammy awards and many other honors including induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the award of a National Medal of Arts.

Les loved to play the guitar, and enjoyed a weekly gig in New York City until the end of his life. Among my treasured professional experiences is being a member of Les’ band during these years and getting to play some of the classic guitar arrangements with Les himself.

I am very excited about this Learning Club, where we will be taking a close look at ten songs which Les put his powerfully distinctive mark on. We will look at these wonderful songs through the Les Paul lens, exploring the guitar techniques and arrangements used by Les in his performances. We will discuss and do things like: Setting a Melody on the fretboard to create specific musical effects, use of Harmonics, Glissandi, Bends, Slides & Slurs, Harmonizing Melodies, Accompaniment Patterns, use of Sound and Color, Phrasing, Rhythm guitar, Background Figures, Anecdotes about Les, and much more.

The ten-week period is the perfect length of time to really dig into the songs and make a lot of improvement while having a lot of fun: A sustained look at the material, with consistent practice, so you can make consistent and measurable progress.

When you sign up, a link is provided to you that contains a trove of downloadable material for you to get ready for the weekly jams. You get pdf chord charts for each of the ten songs, and 21 video lessons where I show you how to play them, and 10 play-along videos.

Best of all, each of the ten weeks features a live, one-hour jam session over Zoom that I lead. This is where we focus on the songs, playing them over and over in different ways, really putting them under the microscope and having a ball while doing it.

I play a lot of rhythm so you can work on all the techniques you’ve been developing and take the songs to the next level.

Each week also features a breakdown of all club member questions and answers about the material that arise during the week. (I do this separately in a video that is provided to all participants in advance of the next session, so as not to cut into the jam time!)

I am really, really excited about the new Guitar Club and about this new way of approaching guitar study. I hope to see you in the Jam Room at the Bye, Bye Blues, Ten Weeks of Les Paul Learning Club!

Songs we will be covering during this Learning Club are: “Bye, Bye Blues”; “Just One More Chance”; “How High the Moon”; “It’s Been a Long, Long Time’; “Vaya Con Dios”; “Avalon”; “The World is Waiting for the Sunrise”; “Deed I Do”; “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Whispering”.
