The Romance of Jazz: Ten Weeks of Exquisite Ballads
This is a past presentation that ran live in 2021!
Hello, and welcome to the Ten Weeks of Ballads Learning Club!
There is just something about playing a Ballad. The sense of time slowed down, a gorgeous melody weaving in and out of rich harmonies: a blank canvas to paint your feelings onto.
Jazz musicians love to play Ballads: many have said that you can really tell how someone plays by listening to how they approach a ballad.
That is why I am very excited about this new Learning Club, where we get to spend ten weeks taking a close look at that many exquisite ballads that I simply love to play.
As always, we will use the songs as a jumping off point to study guitar playing and improvisation. In this Learning Club, we will be discussing such topics as: playing a melody: using different areas of the fingerboard to achieve different musical effects, harmonizing a melody, chord extensions, chord melody, comping techniques for ballad playing, letting phrases breathe, how different chord tones can be used to create different emotions, and much more.
The ten-week Learning Club period is the perfect length of time to really dig into the songs and make a lot of improvement while having a lot of fun: A sustained look at the material, with consistent practice, so you can make consistent and measurable progress.
When you sign up, a link is provided to you that contains a trove of downloadable material for you to get ready for the weekly jams. You get pdf chord charts for each of the ten songs, and a short video lesson where I show you how to play them. And, you receive sound recording files of each of the songs featuring me and a rhythm section playing a backing track so you can practice playing the melody and soloing with me.
Best of all, each of the ten weeks features a live, one-hour jam session over Zoom that I lead. This is where we focus on the songs, playing them over and over in different ways, really putting them under the microscope and having a ball while doing it.
I play a lot of rhythm so you can work on all the techniques you’ve been developing and take the songs to the next level.
Each week also features a breakdown of all club member questions and answers about the material that arise during the week. (I do this separately in a video that is provided to all participants in advance of the next session, so as not to cut into the jam time!)
I am really, really excited about the new Guitar Club and about this new way of approaching guitar study. I hope to see you in the Jam Room at the Romance of Jazz Guitar: Ten Weeks of Exquisite Ballads Learning Club!
Songs we will be covering during this Learning Club are: “Body and Soul”, “Cry Me A River”, “East Of The Sun”, “Misty”, “September Song”, “Stardust”, “Stars Fell on Alabama”, “Sweet Lorraine”, “Tenderly”, and “‘Til There Was You”.
